Playing With Color

At the beginning of each year, my students and I go through some color theory together. We usually do a color wheel for the first class, but this year I wanted to branch out a bit and test how they really know color. So they all got to go through my fabric stash and choose a fabric they liked and wanted to work with. They traced it onto paper and then divided their project into at least 3 spaces (more for my advanced kids). They could choose any shape they wanted to divide with, and then paint the way the fabric was originally presented to them in one space. In the second space, they had to use the complimentary colors. The third space, my younger kids painted back to the original. But my older kids, did some tricky stuff, like went clockwise/counter clockwise on the color wheel for their other spaces. All of the projects were fun to make and made us all think through how color works. Whether they were big or small, this project was great to start with. Enjoy...
